Whitehall officials are poring over an extraordinary plan to install almost 12 million solar panels and 530 wind turbines across a vast expanse of desert in Morocco and then transfer the power they generate to the UK via the world’s longest undersea electricity cable.

Xlinks plans to export clean electricity from Morocco to the UK, via HVDC subsea cables. Facilities will cover around 1,500 square km. In addition to solar and wind facilities, the plan will have a 20 GWh/5 GW battery for exporting electricity as a “near constant” source of power at £48/MWh.

UK-based Xlinks is planning to build 10.5 GW of wind and solar in Morocco and sell the power generated by the huge plant in the UK. This should be made possible by a 3,800 km high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line that would be connected to locations in Wales and Devon. The company’s CEO, Simon Morrish, spoke with pv magazine about the ambitious project, and on how it should become feasible
